United States Pushes for Expanded Energy Exports to India as Strategic Energy and Trade Ties Deepen

The United States is seeking to expand energy exports to India amid rising geopolitical tensions and global energy disruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran. With Secretary Marco Rubio’s upcoming visit, both nations are focusing on energy security, trade negotiations, defense cooperation, and investment flows shaping a deepening strategic partnership.

The United States administration is intensifying efforts to expand energy exports to India, as Washington seeks to deepen strategic economic and geopolitical engagement with the world’s most populous nation. The development comes ahead of a multi-day visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, underscoring growing focus on energy security, trade cooperation, and defense collaboration between the two countries.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor stated in a telephone interview that India has shown strong openness toward energy diversification, particularly through increased purchases of American energy supplies. He said, “India has been receptive to diversification, and what that means is buying more American energy. People have been very receptive to buying from the United States, and we have been very happy with that.”

India is currently facing a severe energy disruption linked to a nearly three-month-long war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel in late February. According to the report, Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, significantly disrupting supply chains and contributing to a sharp rise in global oil prices, with Brent crude increasing by more than 50 percent since the onset of the conflict.

Gor attributed responsibility for the disruption to Iran, stating that the closure of the strategic waterway was the primary cause of supply constraints. He also noted that the US Treasury Department has permitted India to continue purchasing Russian oil that would otherwise fall under sanctions restrictions.

India, a major global energy importer, has historically depended heavily on the Strait of Hormuz for liquefied petroleum gas imports used in cooking fuel, with nearly 90 percent of its LPG imports passing through the route prior to the conflict.

Predictive data from Kpler indicates that India is expected to import record volumes of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas from the United States in May, reflecting Washington’s growing role in India’s energy security framework.

Energy analysts suggest that the United States, as an expanding exporter of oil and LNG, is increasingly focusing on Asian markets, particularly India and China. Vandana Hari, founder of Vanda Insights, stated that Washington views India as a relatively accessible market for expansion. However, she also noted structural constraints, including long transportation distances, higher freight costs, and the limited compatibility of US light sweet crude grades with Indian refinery requirements, which may restrict long-term shifts in purchasing patterns.

The US State Department confirmed that Secretary Rubio’s upcoming visit will prioritize discussions on energy security, trade, and defense cooperation. The itinerary includes meetings with counterparts from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, comprising India, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Gor indicated that announcements related to the Quad are expected, particularly in areas involving technology sharing and defense procurement cooperation, although specific details were not disclosed in advance.

The four-day visit will include stops in New Delhi, Kolkata, Agra, and Jaipur. The duration of the trip is notably longer than Rubio’s typical diplomatic visits, reflecting his dual responsibilities as Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.

Gor, who previously managed the appointment process for thousands of political appointees, assumed the ambassadorial role in India earlier this year. Since arriving in New Delhi in January, he has focused on addressing tensions in US-India relations.

Tensions had previously escalated following claims by former President Donald Trump that he intervened to halt India-Pakistan clashes, preventing a potential nuclear escalation. While Pakistan nominated Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize, India rejected the assertion, maintaining its longstanding position that issues with Pakistan are strictly bilateral matters.

Relations were further strained when the United States imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods in response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil amid Western sanctions related to the Ukraine conflict. However, the dynamic has since shifted, with Washington now allowing Russian crude imports by India to mitigate supply disruptions caused by the Iran conflict.

Gor stated that after months of negotiations, he played a key role in securing progress toward an interim trade agreement that reduced tariffs on Indian goods. He expressed expectation that the agreement, initially announced earlier this year, would be formally signed soon following finalization of legal language.

The proposed trade framework also emphasizes increased Indian purchases of American energy. However, analysts highlight persistent challenges, including logistical distances, elevated freight costs, and refinery compatibility issues that may limit the scale of long-term energy trade realignment.

In addition, Gor highlighted $20.5 billion in investments by Indian companies in the United States announced this month, with a significant share directed toward the pharmaceutical sector, reinforcing expanding bilateral economic interdependence.

The evolving energy and trade partnership underscores a broader strategic recalibration between Washington and New Delhi, with energy security, defense collaboration, and economic integration emerging as central pillars of the relationship.
